Our work is guided by our purpose to improve clients' lives and underpinned by values including Hope, Trust & Integrity, Compassion, Partnership, and Tangata Whenua.

For over 50 years, Lifeline Aotearoa has provided essential counselling and crisis support to New Zealanders facing distress and emotional hardship, via a 24/7 national helpline and text service. We assist individuals, families, and communities to build wellbeing across the country.

The Opportunity

We invite applications for the position of Shift Supervisor, a part-time role requiring 32 hours per week across a roster that includes evenings and weekends. The role’s main objective is to oversee the smooth, efficient, and secure operation of Lifeline’s 24/7 helpline service during assigned shifts.

The Shift Supervisor will lead and manage both staff and volunteers, ensuring professional, compassionate, and effective support is delivered to all callers. This role suits either an experienced practitioner prepared to advance into leadership or an existing leader.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to helpline team members including volunteers.
  • Support staff in delivering high-quality, empathetic, and effective crisis intervention.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A recognised qualification in Social Work, Nursing, or a related health profession with mandatory professional registration.
  • Proven experience in helpline, counselling, mental health, or social services settings.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including providing direction and support to diverse teams.
  • Preferably experienced in managing operations within a continuous 24/7 service environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to stay composed, supportive, and solution-oriented during complex interactions.
  • A firm commitment to delivering safe, person-focused support in line with Lifeline’s values.

Workplace Highlights

  • Work within an inclusive, diverse workplace committed to dementia-friendly principles and accredited DVFREE practices.
  • Join an organisation aligned with Te Uru Tāngata Centre for Workplace Inclusion and a participant in the Pride Pledge.
  • Access to free counselling and support through Employee Assistance programs.
  • Employee wellbeing resources available for you and your family.
  • Discounts on various services and products through the BOOST program.
  • Receive a $200 referral bonus for recommending new hires to PSN.

  • Option to purchase up to 10 additional annual leave days each year.
