Senior Education Advisor

About the Role

This is a permanent, full-time position based at the Whangārei office in Te Tai Tokerau. As a Senior Education Advisor, you will play a critical role in enhancing educational outcomes, particularly within Māori-medium kura across Tai Tokerau. The education system is currently addressing improvements in student attendance and achievement via a knowledge-rich curriculum grounded in the science of learning. Efforts also extend to strengthening learning support interventions and workforce development.

The Education Advisory service supports the education sector to implement priorities through:

• Communicating government priorities and strategies to ensure clear understanding and effective delivery.
• Identifying, brokering, and facilitating implementation support.
• Monitoring and reporting on progress toward implementation objectives.
• Engaging with schools, kura, and whānau to promote student attendance and engagement.
• Utilizing a variety of support and intervention tools to improve attendance and achievement outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience

• Tertiary qualification in education, leadership, or equivalent practical experience, preferably with a background as a Tumuaki (principal).
• Proven analytical skills with the ability to interpret student achievement data to identify needs and set priorities.
• Experience in designing and executing projects effectively.
• Ability to build strong relationships internally and externally.
• Proficiency in Tikanga Māori and fluency in Te Reo Māori, both written and spoken.
• Comprehensive understanding of New Zealand’s education system and related legislation.
• Insight into factors affecting learner achievement and participation.
• Familiarity with the New Zealand National Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (Māori immersion curriculum).
• Awareness of National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP), Ka Hikitia, the Action Plan for Pacific Education, and Success for All frameworks.
• Possession of a current full driver’s licence.
• Commitment to uphold the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

Additional Competencies

• Knowledge and promotion of Te Ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and Te Reo Māori.
• Understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as applicable in the public sector.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, alongside interpersonal skills.

Salary and Benefits

The role offers an annual salary ranging from $85,225 to $103,071, plus KiwiSaver contributions. Appointment salary will be based on skills and experience.
