Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

Stuff Digital reaches over two million New Zealanders monthly through its web, app, and video platforms. The engineering team focuses on audience-facing experiences, AI-enhanced tooling, and maintains a stack including React and React Native. We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer skilled in frontend and mobile development to support Tech Leads in steering architecture, improving code quality, and mentoring peers. This role specializes in the user experience layer with opportunities to expand into backend service engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain high-quality web and mobile user experiences using React.js and React Native.
• Define and influence the architecture and technical direction of frontend and mobile applications.
• Manage mobile release engineering including CI/CD pipelines, Fastlane automation, app store submissions, and over-the-air updates.
• Create advanced multimedia features such as scalable video streaming experiences.
• Deliver resilient, offline-capable applications ensuring continued function without network connectivity.
• Provide mentorship to engineers and promote a robust engineering culture with a focus on testing.
• Expand backend engineering skills by contributing to APIs and cloud services supporting products.
• Incorporate AI, automation, and emerging technologies to drive innovation.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to maximize customer value.
• Enhance application performance, accessibility, and reliability across platforms.

Candidate Requirements

• Proven senior-level experience delivering production React.js and React Native applications.
• Practical knowledge of native iOS and/or Android tooling, platform standards, and release workflows.
• Experience with Fastlane and CI/CD processes for mobile deployment including over-the-air updates.
• Capability to develop multimedia functionalities such as video streaming and playback.
• Experience building offline-first apps with features like local persistence, caching, synchronization, and graceful failure modes.
• Skill in designing reusable UI component libraries or SDKs for wider team use.
• Familiarity with integration of advertising into apps and web platforms.
• Strong understanding of frontend architecture including state management, modular design, and logical UI separation.
• Competent in contemporary testing techniques and frameworks at unit, integration, and end-to-end levels.
• Willingness to learn backend services including APIs, Java/Spring, AWS, Kubernetes, and DevOps—prior exposure is advantageous but optional.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with enthusiasm for mentoring, collaboration, and continuous professional growth.
• Interest in leveraging AI to enrich software development and user experiences.
