Job description

About the company

Datacom brings together people and technology to solve problems, open up new opportunities, and help communities discover what’s possible. The organisation is undergoing a major AI uplift across the ANZ market, with customers responding strongly to its new service direction.

About the role

Datacom is seeking an AI Architect to shape the technical direction of AI-enabled products and services. This role owns the architecture for scalable, secure, production-ready AI solutions and turns business goals into clear technical designs. You will work with modern cloud platforms, large language models, and agentic AI approaches, acting as the main technical authority across multiple initiatives.

With a strong software engineering foundation and practical AI experience, you will help teams make sound technology choices, set architecture standards, and ensure solutions are built on reliable foundations. You will also be part of the Digital Engineering leadership team and contribute to Datacom’s broader AI strategy.

Key responsibilities

You will lead the end-to-end architecture for AI solutions across several customer engagements, helping evaluate, choose, and standardise the AI tools, frameworks, and platforms used by the business.

You will develop reference architectures, design patterns, and delivery standards; facilitate architecture reviews; provide technical governance; and work closely with product owners, data scientists, and engineering leaders to translate requirements into scalable designs.

You will design the data architecture needed for AI workloads, including ingestion, processing, storage, and retrieval. You will also define standards for AI quality, testing, security, and observability, while supporting build-versus-buy decisions and managing vendor and partner relationships.

In addition, you will coach and uplift engineering teams, keep pace with changes in the AI landscape, share practical insights with the organisation, and present technical strategies to senior stakeholders and customers.

Required expertise

You should bring strong capability in agentic AI and multi-agent orchestration, including tools, planning, reflection, and chain-of-thought approaches.

You will need experience creating AI evaluation frameworks with metrics, benchmarks, and QA methods for non-deterministic systems, along with practical prompt engineering, prompt management, and prompt security practices such as injection prevention and guardrails.

Experience ensuring dependable model serving, GPU optimisation, and cost-aware inference is important.

Your background should include end-to-end solution architecture across frontend, backend, data, and AI layers; creation of architectural decision records, reference architectures, and technical design documents; and a strong grasp of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and microservices.

You will also need experience designing AI data architectures, API patterns such as REST, GraphQL, and gRPC, and security controls covering threat modelling, responsible AI, data privacy, and compliance.

Hands-on knowledge of cloud architecture across Azure, AWS, or GCP is expected, along with familiarity with managed AI services such as Bedrock, SageMaker, Vertex AI, and Azure OpenAI.

You should understand serverless and container-based designs, vector and search infrastructure, infrastructure as code, GitOps, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, AI frameworks, and observability practices including tracing, logging, monitoring, and drift detection.

Strong leadership, mentoring, workshop facilitation, and communication skills are also essential.
