Job description
About the role
The New York Times is looking for a digital designer to join the Opinion design team. In this role, you will shape visually compelling, mobile-first storytelling products and experiences that put user experience, performance, and experimentation with new technology first. You will collaborate with creative, technical, and editorial partners, coordinate multiple assets and contributors, and keep work moving to audience and project deadlines.
The company’s broader mission is to deliver independent journalism that helps people understand the world. That mission influences how journalism is created, presented across platforms, and supported as a sustainable business.
Work location
This position is based in New York City and is expected to be in-office with regular attendance. Some remote flexibility may be available depending on departmental guidance.
Responsibilities
- Partner with editors, art directors, video teams, and photo teams to turn ideas into engaging digital storytelling experiences at small, medium, and large scales.
- Create strategic and inventive design responses using interactive storytelling methods and wireframes.
- Refine concepts, compare options, and present multiple directions for stakeholder feedback.
- Build template systems for recurring editorial features.
- Work closely with developers to deliver responsive, high-performing design across devices and browsers.
- Adapt art and design assets into a coordinated set of materials for promotion across different platforms.
- Incorporate input from several stakeholders through an iterative review process while explaining ideas clearly.
- Develop and manage relationships with artists working in illustration, motion, and related disciplines from concept sketches through final artwork.
- Support the presentation of journalism and help encourage learning and constructive discussion about the work.
- Uphold strong journalistic standards in multimedia work.
- Show commitment to journalistic independence and the organization’s mission to seek truth and help people understand the world.
- Report to the Deputy Editor Design.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in digital design.
- Strong visual and interactive design ability, including typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior.
- Experience building iterative wireframes in Figma and applying precise design systems across multiple platforms.
- Strong editorial judgment with a demonstrated ability to innovate and turn editorial priorities into multimedia storytelling.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Willingness to deepen technical understanding and collaborate closely with front-end developers on design details.
- Experience working with video, audio, and data visualization.
- Ability to work in a fast-moving news environment and meet deadlines, including occasional nights or weekends when needed.
- Portfolio should show strength in aesthetics, typography, layout, motion, storytelling, and user-centered design principles.
- Attention to brand consistency and fine visual detail.
- Ability to simplify complex ideas into clear, organized, and effective digital experiences.
- This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

Benefits can include medical, dental, and vision coverage, Flexible Spending Accounts, a company-matching 401(k), paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and professional development programs.
