Job description

Role overview

Royal Mail is recruiting a Postal Delivery Driver for the Stowmarket Delivery Office in IP14 1AA. This is a permanent position paying £13.68 per hour, with monthly pay and the option of paid overtime. The post involves 37 hours per week, spread across 5 days out of 7 from Monday to Sunday, typically working between 06:45 and 14:45.

In this role, you will represent the service in the local community by delivering letters and parcels across Stowmarket. The work keeps you active, includes regular customer contact, and offers a mix of routine and variety.

Working pattern

You will follow a rotating rota, which can include weekends, and your route and exact hours may change depending on demand. Sunday working is required at Ipswich Delivery Office on a rota basis, currently 1 in 4, between 09:00 and 17:00.

Please note that for search purposes, roles working between 35 and 37 hours per week may be shown as full-time, although any role under 37 hours per week is treated as part-time in the employment contract.

Key duties

  • Prepare letters and parcels at the delivery office before going out on route
  • Deliver mail on foot and by van within your local area
  • Develop positive relationships with customers during deliveries
  • Carry out deliveries while working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Handle secure delivery of all items on your route, including election materials and certain regulated items such as food products or alcohol, in line with business standards

Role expectations

This is a physically active, fast-moving job. You should be prepared for long walking routes of up to 12 miles or more than 20,000 steps, daily driving of a Royal Mail van, weather exposure, high parcel volumes, and pressured days, particularly during busy periods.

Candidate profile

Full training, a uniform, and a Royal Mail van will be provided. You will need to be dependable, self-driven, organised, resilient under pressure, and comfortable working independently outdoors. A customer-first approach and pride in service are also important.

Requirements

  • A full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points
  • The driving licence must be registered in your current name and address
  • Willingness and ability to drive a Royal Mail van every day
  • Ability to pass a driving assessment
  • Good physical fitness for long walks, stairs, hills, and lifting or carrying mailbags weighing 10 kg or more
  • Strong organisational ability and resilience in a busy environment
  • Customer-focused attitude and commitment to good service
  • Comfort with outdoor, independent working

Benefits

  • 22.5 days of holiday, increasing with service, adjusted for part-time hours or fixed-term contract duration where relevant
  • Career growth and development opportunities
  • Access to a strong pension scheme and 24/7 wellbeing support, including online GP services
  • Family-friendly policies
  • MyBundle+ savings and offers on everyday purchases, leisure activities, and more
  • Discounted RMG products and free stamps at Christmas

Additional information

This is a permanent contract. Benefits may differ depending on the length of your contract and your start date, and some benefits may only apply after qualifying periods. The role is expected to include handling and delivering all items on the route securely, including election materials and certain restricted items, in line with company standards. No CV is required; the process consists of an online test followed by an interview with the hiring manager.
