Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Full Sutton. This is a demanding, high-responsibility position focused on protecting the public, maintaining prison safety, and supporting people in custody to make better choices.
What the role involves
Each day can bring a different set of duties. You may be keeping order and preventing incidents, then shifting into a more supportive or coaching-style approach later in the same day. The work is carried out directly with prisoners in a controlled environment where safety, professionalism, and sound judgement matter every day.
The job is described as fast-moving and varied, with no two days or situations being the same. As you build experience, you may also have opportunities to progress and specialise in different areas.
Who this role suits
The service is looking for people with integrity, resilience, self-assurance, empathy, and strong communication skills. Backgrounds can vary widely, and experience from areas such as parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces can all translate well. A key part of the role is building constructive, professional relationships with offenders, even when they are facing very difficult circumstances.
Teamwork is essential, and you must be ready to support colleagues and work as part of one unit to help keep the prison, prisoners, and staff safe.
Working pattern
You will need to work rotating shifts, including weekends.
Pay and benefits
The salary range for this opportunity is £33,746 to £38,003. Benefits mentioned include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
In addition to pay and benefits, the role offers structured training, development support, and progression opportunities, including routes to specialise. The work can also provide a strong sense of purpose and achievement through helping people turn their lives around.
How to apply
Applicants who feel they match the qualities required are invited to submit an application.
