Role overview
Chelsea Football Club is hiring a Level 1 SIA (Response) Safety Steward to support match day safety operations at Stamford Bridge or Kingsmeadow Stadium in London. The position exists to help deliver a safe, secure, and well-managed environment for visitors and staff, in line with the Green Guide and the requirements of the local authority safety certificate under the Safety of Sports Ground Act 1975.
As part of the event day safety team, you will help maintain order, respond to incidents, and ensure the stadium environment remains compliant, safe, and welcoming throughout events and related activities.
Interview availability
Interviews are scheduled for Thursday 18 June, Friday 3 July, or Monday 13 July. Applicants must be available on at least one of these dates, as no alternative interview slots can be provided. Early applications are encouraged.
Main duties
- Help deliver safe events on behalf of Chelsea FC while providing a high standard of service to everyone on site.
- Consistently follow the Steward Code of Conduct.
- Comply with safeguarding policies and procedures, and report any welfare or safeguarding concerns arising before, during, or after events.
- Share availability clearly and promptly with the club, support Match Day Safety Team activities as required, attend refresher or in-service training when needed, and meet the club’s suitability standards under the sessional worker engagement terms.
- Attend pre-match briefings and post-match debriefs, and complete sign-in/sign-out procedures while receiving duty allocations.
- Know where fire-fighting and first aid equipment is located, and be able to use it safely and effectively if trained to do so.
- Understand emergency alert procedures and respond quickly to instructions from supervisors, the Chief Steward, the Assistant Safety Officer, the Safety Officer, or police officers in an emergency.
- Spot possible fire risks and suspicious items, and escalate them immediately to the appropriate senior staff member.
- Observe spectators for signs of distress or overcrowding and take the correct action in line with standing instructions.
- Help prevent overcrowding near assembly points and fire exits, discourage climbing on fences or structures, and stop spectators standing on seats wherever possible.
- Keep gangways and exits clear at all times.
- Make sure all stewarding positions are properly covered according to the event stewarding plan.
- Stay at the assigned post unless told otherwise by an authorised supervisor or safety official.
- Report any damage that could affect spectator safety, such as a broken seat, to the relevant senior staff member.
- Support contingency procedures during emergencies, pitch incursions or invasions, and stadium evacuation.
- Assist in identifying spectators who are banned, without tickets, or carrying forged tickets, in line with ground regulations and ticketing terms and conditions.
- Build strong familiarity with the stadium layout, including entrances, exits, and evacuation messages for all areas.
Performance expectations
- Represent Chelsea FC professionally at all times and avoid any outside work that could create a conflict of interest with club duties.
- Maintain a consistently positive attitude.
Qualifications and experience
- Ideally, you should already hold or be working towards a Level 2 Spectator Safety qualification.
- A valid SIA qualification is required.
- First aid certification is desirable.
- You should have strong communication and organisational skills.
- You need the ability to organise and motivate team members.
