Job Overview

The University of South Carolina's South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology is seeking a full-time Archaeologist I to manage the Hobby License program and related Maritime Research Division (MRD) databases, support archaeological research efforts, participate in community outreach, and serve as principal or co-principal investigator on designated projects. The role also includes equipment management and acting as a dive safety officer for the MRD.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer the Hobby License program and maintain MRD databases.
• Support and conduct archaeological research within the MRD.
• Engage with the community through outreach events related to archaeology.
• Serve as a principal or co-principal investigator as assigned by the supervisor.
• Manage equipment associated with the MRD.
• Act as a dive safety officer, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Strong public relations and communication skills, including public speaking and flexible writing for research and educational outreach.
• Research, documentation, and organizational abilities.
• Extensive scuba diving experience, including under challenging conditions such as low or zero visibility, heavy seas, and currents.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media platforms.
• Experience in small boat handling.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in archaeology or anthropology is favored.
