Caseworker

Position Overview

Caseworkers are responsible for professional intervention with youth offenders under youth justice programs, aiming to lower the rates of repeat offenses.

Key Responsibilities

• Exhibit or actively develop cultural competence to foster an inclusive workplace, adhering to the Human Rights Act 2019 and supporting initiatives preserving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural ties.
• Operate effectively within a statutory framework balancing monitoring young offenders' adherence to court-mandated orders and addressing factors that increase re-offense risk.
• Engage proactively in culturally sensitive, evidence-based assessments and interventions, including restorative justice, to reduce recidivism.
• Collaborate as part of multidisciplinary teams and with various internal and external partners to secure positive results for victims, young offenders, their families, and communities.
• Prepare and deliver verbal and written reports to the Children’s Court on behalf of the Chief Executive, including conducting court interviews and drafting pre-sentence reports, affidavits, and supporting documents.
• Manage records and information to maintain accountability and compliance standards.
• Commit to ongoing professional development through training, supervision, and accreditation to reinforce contribution towards organizational objectives.

Skills and Technical Requirements

• Possess an understanding of the impact historical and current policies have on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and demonstrate effective, respectful communication with these communities.
• Perform duties within standard work hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM with potential for additional hours compensated per award provisions.
• Maintain a current "C" Class Driver’s license due to travel requirements involving government vehicles.
• Accommodate work-related travel within the region, including site visits, regional collaboration, overnight stays, and flights to remote locations.
• Hold a relevant tertiary degree in fields such as social work, behavioural or social science, criminology, or an acknowledged equivalent that includes coverage of specific subject areas.
• If holding other recognised degrees, provide documentation evidencing completion of a minimum of six subjects encompassing at least four of seven key areas including communication, assessment/intervention skills, case management, theoretical frameworks, Indigenous knowledge, criminal justice, and community development.

Additional Information
