Job Overview
Operate a heavy-duty truck to transport goods reliably and punctually, ensuring adherence to company policies and timelines, primarily on a scheduled nightly linehaul route between Kingston and Montego Bay. Maintain safety and security standards throughout transportation.
Primary Responsibilities
- Drive heavy or light trucks within city and industrial zones, including long-distance trips, to deliver and collect goods.
- Perform loading and unloading of cargo appropriately.
- Manage and process all necessary freight documentation accurately.
- Use knowledge of traffic laws, alternative routing, and current driving conditions to meet delivery deadlines.
- Utilize and understand route planning technologies for efficient navigation.
- Assist in ensuring the truck and cargo meet technical and operational requirements.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and perform minor repairs on the vehicle during transit.
- Immediately report any security breaches or unusual occurrences to supervisors.
- Comply with all relevant legislative and company driving standards.
- Identify and escalate any repetitive delivery issues to the supervisor.
- Execute scheduled nightly trips consistently on the fixed Kingston-Montego Bay route, adhering to strict departure and arrival times.
- Collaborate with hub teams to ensure efficient loading and unloading, preventing delays.
- Maintain strict compliance with DHL's network schedules and follow escalation protocols for any delays.
- Provide real-time updates on trip status, delays, or incidents to the dispatch/control tower.
Stakeholder Interaction
- Communicate company policies, procedures, and practices clearly to colleagues within the team.
- Maintain strong working relationships by properly addressing task-related matters.
- Work closely with operations teams in Kingston and Montego Bay as well as security personnel as needed.
- Coordinate scheduling and handle exceptions in conjunction with relevant hubs.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Operate primarily during night shifts with fixed or rotating schedules.
- Drive for extended hours along the Kingston to Montego Bay corridor.
- Be prepared for varying weather and road conditions.
- Work on weekends or public holidays may be required depending on operational needs.
Pre-Trip/Post-Trip Vehicle Compliance
- Perform thorough vehicle inspections before and after trips to check fuel, tires, brakes, and lights.
- Immediately report mechanical faults and ensure no unsafe vehicle is dispatched.
Qualifications and Skills
- Vocational, specialized, technical education or relevant certification.
- Holds a valid open general driver’s license with a minimum of five years of experience driving heavy-duty vehicles.
- Experience preferred in long-distance or linehaul transportation.
- Clean driving record without major traffic infractions.
- Capable of consistent night driving on a set schedule.
- Basic mechanical knowledge of heavy trucks.
- Familiarity with Jamaica's road network, especially the Kingston-Montego Bay route.
- Defensive driving certification is an advantage.
- Subject to background and security clearance as per company compliance requirements.
