Role Overview

Envision yourself in a transformative era, shaping computing interfaces for users unfamiliar with digital tools. Our mission is to design software with timeless appeal, combining the precision of German cameras, the joy of Japanese toys, and universal charm comparable to Coca-Cola. We face complex challenges that demand exceptional product intuition, technical skill, and refined craftsmanship.

This position is available in either San Francisco or New York City. Our team collaborates onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, which we call Anchor Days, to foster collective creativity and development.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop innovative product concepts that incorporate vision, quality craftsmanship, rapid execution, and commercial viability.
• Oversee the design of new features from conception through detailed user experience and pixel-perfect delivery.
• Lead projects alongside engineering teams to ensure alignment and successful deployment.
• Collaborate with Customer Experience, Sales, and Customer Success to understand and prioritize varied user needs for product enhancements.
• Work with Marketing to craft compelling narratives that engage users throughout their journey across multiple channels including the product interface, help documents, and website.
• Design intuitive, practical new interaction patterns and thoughtfully evolve our design system as we grow.

Required Qualifications

• At least five years of comprehensive experience leading design projects independently from start to finish.
• Strong customer empathy and dedication to crafting user experiences that effectively address user problems.
• Proficiency in resolving ambiguous conceptual challenges with intuitive models that enable users to quickly derive benefit.
• Demonstrated ability to produce clean, engaging, and user-friendly human interfaces.
• Balanced approach prioritizing business impact and design practicality without sacrificing craftsmanship or speed.
• Collaborative mindset with openness to feedback, enabling sound decision-making by synthesizing diverse perspectives.
• Capability to communicate ideas persuasively through storytelling using both verbal and visual methods.
• Experience working cross-functionally across project management, engineering, research, data teams, and fellow designers.

Preferred Extras

• Prior experience designing and delivering excellent tools within small teams.
• Diverse skills and perspectives that enrich team capabilities.
• An understanding of the inefficiencies caused by scattered tools and a motivation to unify them.
• Familiarity with influencers in computing such as Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and Bret Victor.
• Ability to both design and code is a plus.

Compensation and Policies

Notion offers competitive salaries, equity, and benefits. Compensation depends on location, role complexity, and candidate expertise. For San Francisco-based roles, the estimated annual base salary ranges between $285,000 and $330,000.
