Role purpose
The Screener is responsible for ensuring that hold baggage is screened safely and efficiently, with full compliance to regulatory requirements and a sharp focus on identifying prohibited items or security risks. This role involves operating screening systems, recording observations, coordinating with security teams, and engaging with passengers when needed to maintain strong airport security standards.
Key responsibilities
- Complete all mandatory regulatory training and successfully clear assessments within the allowed attempts.
- Use X-BIS equipment to analyse baggage images and identify dangerous goods, prohibited items, weapons, ammunition, and other security concerns in line with AVSEC circulars, orders, guidelines, and SOPs.
- Carry out manual checks and ETD testing for bags that are selected during X-ray screening.
- Keep TIP (Threat Image Projection) scores at a strong level to demonstrate effective image interpretation skills.
- Follow BCAS and DGCA rules closely while performing baggage screening and inspection duties.
- Maintain accurate records of findings and day-to-day screening activities to support audits and inspections.
- Perform pre-operational checks on X-BIS, ETD, CT-EDS, and other security equipment to ensure they are functional and ready for use.
- Report any equipment faults or downtime promptly and support upkeep of operational registers.
- Work closely with CISF and airline personnel during physical inspections or resolution of suspicious items.
- Keep supervisors informed in a timely manner about operational issues or situations needing attention.
- Ensure screening and inspection work is completed within the required timelines so airport operations are not delayed.
- Maintain a disciplined, professional, and compliant work style that supports a healthy team environment.
Stakeholders
Internal: CSO, Lead AVSEC Audit & Compliance, Pass Section, Lead - ILHBS / Duty Manager - ILHBS / Sr Screener, Terminal Operations, IT, HR Department, Compliance and Regulatory Teams, and other airport departments such as Operations and Customer Service.
External: Transportation Security Administration (TSA), aircraft operators, airport authorities, passengers, ASG, BCAS, local police, service providers, law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies, and industry associations.
Qualifications and experience
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification. Freshers may apply, and candidates with 1–2 years of experience in security screening or a related field, preferably in an airport environment, will also be considered. Experience with screening equipment and security procedures is preferred.
Required certifications include TSA certification. It is also desirable to have completed the BCAS AVSEC basic course, BCAS standalone or inline screener certification, and DGCA-approved DGR CAT 12 certification. Candidates holding NCC “C” or “B” certificates will be preferred.
Physical and communication requirements
Candidates should meet the physical standards needed for screening work. Vision must be 20/60 or better in both eyes without glasses or lenses, or 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other when using glasses or contact lenses, with adequate colour perception. Hearing loss in each ear should be below 30 dB when tested by audiograph for frequencies under 2000 Hz. Applicants must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in speech, move without noticeable impairment that affects crisis communication, detect odour, and maintain a high standard of civility, appearance, sobriety, and public courtesy.
