Role overview
Wood is inviting expressions of interest for a Project Director (Offshore) to join its Qatar team. The role is focused on delivering strong execution across an assigned project, program, or portfolio, while giving the customer confidence through firm control of scope, schedule, cost, and risk.
This position leads the definition, direction, and completion of one or more major projects or programs. It carries accountability for safety, scope, cost, schedule, risk, reporting, governance, and change management. The work typically involves high complexity, significant financial exposure, multiple workstreams, and oversight of several project managers.
Key responsibilities
- Own profit and loss performance, including revenue delivery, margin and overhead control, budgeting, forecasting, risk/opportunity reviews, cost management, payable/billing oversight, and cash collection.
- Review and shape project proposals and plans, including timelines, delivery methods, staffing needs, and phase-wise allocation of resources, while ensuring company policy and best practice are followed.
- Manage customer-requested scope changes and apply the formal change control process for any adjustments to scope, cost, schedule, or quality.
- Promote innovation through digital tools, technology adoption, work-sharing approaches, and value-adding engineering centres.
- Approve project procedures and execution plans, including scope of work, deliverables, master schedule, budget, organization charts, and risk register.
- Confirm that project team members have the required capability to perform their assigned responsibilities.
- Oversee proposals and call-offs within delegated authority, ensuring alignment with contracting policy and ethical standards.
- Track schedule, cost, and quality performance and step in early when delays or slippage appear likely.
- Ensure the necessary project management systems are in place and that related training is completed.
- Set up the project assurance protocol and review schedule.
- Support the establishment of terms and conditions and, for larger assignments, contribute to community visibility and project staff attraction efforts.
- Lead HSSE for the project, including initiative planning, audit scheduling, and proactive handling of quality and safety issues.
- Encourage strong working practices and broader corporate initiatives across projects and programs.
- Resolve complex issues escalated by the project team.
- Take part in assurance reviews and peer review activities.
- Use professional credibility to support deal closure, attract specialist talent, and manage relationships with officials, community groups, customers, and contractors where the project context is politically sensitive or internationally complex.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering.
- PMP, APM, or an equivalent project management certification is preferred.
- More than 20 years of overall relevant experience, including at least 10 years in project management.
- Substantial background in successfully delivering large, complex international or remote-location projects.
- Strong technical capability aligned to the project scope.
- Solid experience in the relevant industry, field, and operating locations.
- Deep knowledge of project success measures and benefits management.
- Advanced stakeholder management skills, including experience with difficult stakeholders and the ability to coach others.
- Strong understanding of requirements management from definition through monitoring and verification.
- Working knowledge of workflow management, engineering ownership policies, project globalization, and tender processes.
- Experience building and managing multi-phase project budgets, including risk allowances.
- Expertise in risk management, including translating risks into cost, time, contingency, and forecast impacts.
- Advanced knowledge of vendor contracts and the ability to build suitable commercial frameworks and negotiate them through to closure.
- Capability to manage major project start-up and communicate the project execution plan effectively.
- Strong grasp of explicit and implicit dependencies and the ability to incorporate them into recommendations.
- Experience improving project performance and recovering underperforming projects.
- Understanding of supplier categorisation and appropriate commercial acquisition strategies.
- Knowledge of information management requirements across project phases, including contractual, statutory, and asset documentation needs.
- Ability to negotiate close-out terms with key stakeholders.
- Ability to manage resources effectively, including people, equipment, and materials.
- Practical experience in commercial and technical risk management.
- Ability to manage cash flow and forecast cost at completion.
